How to Spot Political Bias

Being an advisor has helped me better appreciate differing political opinions. I have clients across the political spectrum. This gives me a chance to listen to and care for all my clients, no matter what side or opinion they take.

As we near the election, it’s becoming clear to me that politics are like the drama we endured in high school: He said; she said. He did; she did. It can be overwhelming with so many voices, articles, and ads rumbling around in our heads. It can cause tension between families and friends with all these voices telling us to view those with opposing viewpoints as enemies, not just people with different opinions.

Being an advisor has helped me better appreciate differing political opinions. I have clients across the political spectrum. This gives me a chance to listen to and care for all my clients, no matter what side or opinion they take. It may seem hard to believe, but I truly enjoy it!

Some clients have contacted me very concerned that if Biden is elected, their tax rates will skyrocket and ruin their financial retirement plans. Other clients have contacted me very concerned that if Trump is elected, he will end social security income and ruin their financial retirement plans. In both cases, their concerns are real. In both cases, I also think their concerns are exaggerated, because of what they have been hearing or reading. One thing that is difficult to remember is that our government has checks and balances in place, regardless of who is President.

While it is normal to have biases and take sides politically, I encourage you to read articles and listen to people who are doing their best to admit their biases and analyze things as fairly as they can. Sadly, this content is difficult to find. But it’s there if you are willing to do a bit of work to find it. Also, if you notice that the content you are consuming is targeting your fears, take a step back. Most likely the article, video, or commercial is exaggerating the outcome should the “other” candidate be elected.

As we talk with friends and family members with differing political opinions this election season, let’s try to do a better job of listening. And, as difficult as it is, trust that both sides are trying to do what they think is best for our country.
