What a difference a year makes. On March 23, 2020, the S&P 500 tumbled another 3%, culminating a near 34% drop over that same month. The Dow Jones hovered around 19,000. Gains from the past few years were gone. The pandemic was in full swing. The thought of recession was no longer up for discussion; it was now a virtual certainty. The only question on most everyone’s minds was how much worse financially things could get.

This reminds me of the last time I was on a roller coaster. I hate those things, especially the older I get. I love my kids though, so I suffer through the ride, knowing they’ll have smiles for me at the end. It goes without saying that the last thing I would consider doing is jumping off in the middle of it, most notably after that first long drop.

Imagine jumping out of all stock exposure on March 23, 2020, when the historic market freefall came to a halt. One year later, the S&P has catapulted up over 70% while the Dow has eclipsed 32,000, both record numbers. Enduring the market’s ups and downs has never promised to be an easy ride. Hang on. Smiles await.
