I grew up on a farm in Northwest Iowa. Our house had large windows facing the North. I used to enjoy sitting on the couch late at night while storms would roll across the countryside. The best part about this late night entertainment was watching the sky light up like fireworks. Most of the time the lightning strikes were far off in the distance and not close to home.
A few weeks ago, a storm rolled through Des Moines in the early morning hours. As this storm began to build, my wife, Brooke, and I wandered into our girls’ bedroom to check on them. Suddenly, a lightening strike lit up the room, and the accompanying thunder shook the whole house. The four of us were very much awake! Eventually, the storm concluded, Brooke and I returned to our rooms, and all of us were able to get some additional sleep before the day started.
As we made our way downstairs that morning, we noticed a large branch of our neighbor’s tree arching over the fence. The tree, less than 100 feet from our house, was the victim of the strike that caught our attention the night before.
All of us experience storms in life that force us to change course. There is no way to avoide them. Most of the time, these storms have a direct impact on our finances.
